Mitra Baratchi

profile-image
  • Group leader

Mitra is an associate professor at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science. Her research interest lies in spatio-temporal, time-series, and mobility data modelling. Specifically, she designs algorithms that extract patterns from such data in a fully automated manner. Her research targets applications in a broad range of urban, environmental, and industrial domains for which she has collaborations notably with the European Space Agency, Honda Research Institute, various municipalities, and researchers in other scientific disciplines.

Laurens Arp

profile-image
  • Postdoc

Laurens is a postdoc at Leiden University supervised by Dr. Mitra Baratchi, Dr. Saber Salehkaleybar, and Dr. Elena Raponi. His research focuses on causal machine learning from spatio-temporal data. Prior to that, he completed his PhD working on a project named “Physics-aware Spatio-temporal Machine Learning for Earth Observation Data” in collaboration with the European Space Agency.

Sina Ghorbani Kolahi

profile-image
  • PhD student

Sina Ghorbani Kolahi is a PhD candidate in Human Media Interaction at the University of Twente, funded by the NWA project Loneliness – Building 4 Belonging. In his doctoral research, he develops spatio-temporal and deep learning models to study how high school students’ social behaviors and physical activity evolve over time and across contexts. Sina’s research sits at the intersection of machine learning, multimodal sensing, and well-being.

Khashayar Fathinejad

profile-image
  • PhD student

Khashayar is a PhD fellow at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University. His topic is “Interpretable causal machine learning for intervention development from wearable sensor data.” He is supervised by Wessel Kraaij, Mitra Baratchi, and Saber Salehkaleybar.

Julia Wąsala

profile-image
  • PhD student

Julia started as a PhD candidate at the ADA research group in September 2022. She is supervised by Mitra Baratchi and Holger Hoos, as well as Ilse Aben and Bram Maasakkers from SRON. Previously, she completed her master’s degree in Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence at Leiden University. Her master’s thesis was on Automated Machine Learning for Earth Observation. She will continue to work on this topic during her PhD, in collaboration with ESA Phi-lab and SRON.

Nuno Sa

profile-image
  • PhD student

Nuno is a PhD student on the topic of remote sensing for conservation in Oostvaardersplassen. His research focuses on developing big data solutions based on remote sensing and advanced ecoinformatics tools to monitor the flora and fauna of the Oostvaardersplassen and help understand the animal and plant dynamics occurring in this unique ecosystem.

Tanisha Kasahr

profile-image
  • Master's student

My name is Tanisha and I am a master’s student at Leiden University, studying Computer Science in the Artificial Intelligence specialization. I am currently writing my master’s thesis on Algorithmic Recourse, under the supervision of Dr. Mitra Baratchi. My topic involves producing solutions/ ways in which an individual can change an unfavorable and consequential automated decision, like a loan denial, for example, with an optimization technique using epsilon-manifolds, and an approximated causal model of the underlying system.

Abygail Stegena

profile-image
  • Master's student

Abygail is a Computer Science master’s student in the Artificial Intelligence specialisation at Leiden University. She is currently doing her master’s thesis on the integration of cross-validation methods for spatially correlated data in Automated Machine Learning. She is supervised by Dr. Mitra Baratchi and Julia Wąsala.

Emil Sobotka

profile-image
  • Master's student

Emil is a computer science master’s student at RWTH Aachen University. He is currently writing his thesis on denoising Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to improve environmental monitoring tasks in cooperation with Leiden University. His advisors are Dr. Mitra Baratchi, Dr. Marie Anastacio (AIM), and Dr. Laurens Arp.
